What is Usana?

Based in Utah, USA, Usana Health Sciences is a multi-level marketing company, often referred to as direct selling or network marketing company.

Since 1992, Usana is producing high-quality, pharmaceutical-grade nutritional supplements, vitamins, and personal care products. Currently, Usana operates in 20+ countries around the globe.

What separates Usana from the rest of nutritional companies is that the products Usana manufactures are science-based.

Their tagline is “The Cellular Nutrition Company”, and their Advisory Council consists of many PhDs and MDs.

Who is the Founder?

What is Usana? - The Founder
Dr. Myron W. Wentz

Usana was founded by Myron W. Wentz, a double Ph.D. scientist, an internationally recognized expert in microbiology and immunology.

He is also a pioneer in the development of human cell culture technology and infectious disease diagnosis.

He worked towards discovering the value of antioxidants and their effects on free radicals in the body.

So, he has a true interest in improving human health.

Probably, this is one of the reasons Usana products are considered to be the best in the industry, and Usana has such a good reputation throughout the globe.

Dr. Wentz was honored by Albert Einstein Award for Outstanding Achievement in the Life Sciences.

What is Usana’s Financial Situation?

Usana has experienced tremendous growth in revenue in recent years. In 2015, it reached almost $1 billion USD, and it continued to grow until 2018 when it reached $1, 189 million USD.

Then, in the last year (2019), there was a 10% decrease and Usana revenue for 2019 constituted $1, 061 million USD.

10% is not that much. There are other MLM companies, which revenue dropped even more in 2019.

What Are Usana Products?

Let’s take a closer look at Usana products. They have 3 main product categories like:

#1. Nutritional Supplements – all sorts of vitamins, minerals, and antioxidants.

#2. Food, and Energy Drinks – meal replacement shakes, protein powders, snack bars, products that help with detox/digestion, etc.

#3. Personal Care – Hair and Body Care, Oral Care, etc.

What is Usana? - The Products

Besides that, Usana has products designed specifically for both men, women, as well as children.

Also, with Usana, you can shop according to your specific health goal, for example, bone and joint health, brain and nerve health, heart health, immune health, etc.

If you wonder where you could get Usana products, please note that they couldn’t be found in a drugstore or in your local market because they sell the products exclusively through their network of distributors.

I have seen a few Usana products listed for sale on Amazon and most probably, if you buy through Amazon, you’d be buying from one of Usana representatives.

Are Usana Products Worth Their Price?

Overall, Usana has a good reputation and most of the people chose this brand amongst the others available.

One of Usana’s most popular product is the CellSentials vitamins.

What is Usana? - CellSentials Vitamins

As you can see, these vitamins list for almost $60. This is 28-days supply if you take it as recommended: twice a day with food, by two pills each time.

It’s interesting that on the back of these vitamins container says that there are some vitamins that exceed the recommended daily allowance (RDA), as Vitamin A, C, D, K, B1.

So for people who don’t have a balanced diet, these vitamins could be very beneficial. But for those who follow a healthy diet, these amounts are not necessary and there certainly are other alternatives on the market for half the price.

However, like with any other product I guess, there are also people who are not that satisfied with Usana products.

Some of them think that Usana is no different from other supplements, on top of that, they are even overpriced.

What is Usana? - Some Negative Product Reviews

There is no guarantee that you or your potential customer will not face the same issues.

So, I think this is worth taking into consideration before deciding to join Usana.

How Much Does it Cost to Join Usana?

The price that you are going to pay to join Usana will depend on the status you want to join: Usana Preferred Customer or Usana Associate.

You can join as Usana Preferred Customer for free and enjoy 10% discounts on all your future orders. If you chose the “auto-order” option, you’ll get an additional 10% discount. So, here you have a total of 20% discount when you purchase Usana products. Keep in mind though, that as a Preferred Customer, you are not allowed to resell Usana products.

If you want to join Usana business opportunity, then you’ll need to sign up as Usana Associate and this will cost you $29.95 USD to pay for your Welcome Kit. Note that this kit doesn’t contain any samples or products.

What you’ll find inside is are some of the documents that outline your role as an Associate: Get Started checklist, Online Resource Guide, Usana Policies and Procedures, Compensation information, and information on how to build your team within Usana.

How to Make Money With Usana?

Like with any other MLM out there, you can choose to work part-time or full-time promoting and selling Usana products.

There are two ways in which you can make money doing that:

#1. Retail Sales

Buy Usana products for a preferred price, and then resell them to your end customer for a retail price. The difference between the two is your profit.

Usana is unique by the fact that it doesn’t set a fixed % of commissions you can make, so it’s up to you how much you want to charge your customers.

However, Usana recommends a 10% mark-up over the preferred price. Just to give you an idea, this is not much, and there are other MLM nutritional companies (for example, Isagenix International), which offer 20-30% commissions.

#2. Build Your Network and Earn a Portion of Their Sales

If you have leadership skills, you can then share Usana business opportunity with other people.

Hopefully, if there are people interested to do the same things as you do, they might become your downline, who will further build their downlines, and this process may go forever.

As a team leader, you are qualified to earn commissions from your team members sales knows as Group Sales.

Also, as you move through the different ranks in Usana Compensation Plan, you get the chance to earn different leadership bonuses, incentives, like luxury travels, and prizes.

While all this sounds so great, very few people can make it through the ranks. I’ll elaborate a little bit more on this in a second.

Do They Allow You to Use the Internet to Build Your Business?

Once you join Usana, you’ll get your own replicated Usana website which you can further use to promote Usana products and make sales.

Is Usana Legitimate?

I have across some articles over the internet where people are claiming that Usana is a scam. Well, that’s a common perception of the MLM industry amongst most of the people.

But it worths noting that it’s not always the case.

Usana is a publicly-traded company at the New York Stock Exchange. It’s an established business in the nutritional industry (27 years of operation), and it’s BBB accredited and it’s a member of the Direct Selling Association.

Also, Usana couldn’t be called a pyramid scheme because, according to Usana Compensation Plan, Associates don’t earn compensation simply for recruiting or sponsoring other Associates or Preferred Customers. They only earn compensation when products are sold.

Can You Make Money With Usana?

If you are good at selling, you can make money with Usana. If you have leadership skills and can lead people towards Usana business opportunity, then your chances to make more money increase.

So, keep in mind that you’ll need to sell and recruit a lot. However, according to some statistic data provided by Usana, in 2017, more than half of U.S. Usana Associates didn’t earn compensation at all.

What is Usana? - More Than Half of US Associates Didn't Earn Compensation at All

It’s up to you to decide but it’s unlikely possible to go full-time selling Usana products.

The Good and The Bad

#1. Publicly-traded Company

As I have already mentioned earlier in this post, Usana is listed on New York Stock Market.

This means that Usana must be able to pay for the generation of financial reporting documents, audit fees, investor relations departments, and accounting oversight committees.

#2. No Complaints on BBB

BBB (Better Business Bureau) is a source for finding trustful businesses.

So far, Usana didn’t get any customer complaints filed on BBB website which is a good sign. Just to give you an idea, Monat business has more than a thousand of customer complaints.

More than that, it received A+ BBB rating.

#3. Usana’s Facilities are Approved by FDA

Normally, nutritional supplements are not regulated by the FDA (Food and Drugs Administration).

But because Usana holds themselves to a very high standard in terms of production process, in 2011, the company took a step further to obtain drug-establishment FDA registration.

Very few nutritional companies did that, so it definitely adds some importance to the Usana brand.

#1. Most People Failed to Make a Living from Selling Usana

Below is a chart showing how much US Usana Associates earned in 2017.

As you can see yourself, 53,45% earned nothing, and only a tiny number of people managed to make a living from selling Usana products.

#2. Beware of Lawsuits Around Usana

Even though, overall, Usana is a respectful company, unfortunately, it couldn’t avoid the experience of being sued in court.

Over the years, it has been accused of operating a pyramid scheme and has paid two Canadian distributors $7 million USD in compensation and damages for wrongful dismissal.

#3. Some Representatives are Making Inappropriate Health Claims

According to TruthInAdvertising.org, there been instances when Usana distributors were making inappropriate claims that Usana products have properties to treat such diseases like leukemia, arthritis, and even cancer.

#4. Monthly Purchase Requirements

In order to stay in the game and be eligible for earning commissions, you’ll need to maintain your active status by purchasing Usana products on a monthly basis.

As every product in Usana system has a certain amount of points, you’ll need to accumulate between 100-200 points every month.

That’s $110-$130 of investment you’ll need to make every month.

It’s up to you whether you chose to use these products yourself, or further sell them to your customers but if you fail to maintain the points, you won’t be able to receive a commission if any.

In other words, you have to pay in order to get paid.

My Final Opinion About Usana + A Better Alternative

Usana is an established nutritional company with a good reputation. If you are in the market for high-quality vitamins and nutritional supplements, it might be the best option for you to try if you haven’t yet done so.

But as a means of making money, I am hesitant to recommend Usana business opportunity. Especially if you are tired to work for someone else and look forward to creating more time and financial freedom for yourself and your family.

If this is your case, I would recommend looking into blogging and affiliate marketing. There is no need to annoy your friends and family, and no need to convince anybody to buy or join anything.

It’s a more passive way to make money and your result will solely depend on your own efforts (unlike the MLMs, you don’t make money if your downline is not making).

What you are going to be doing is building your own affiliate website on your favorite topic and there are is no need to focus only on one specific product, you can talk about as many different products as you want!

If you are thinking about how you are going to be making money, there are so many ways in which you can monetize your website.

Click the red button below to get started for FREE. Believe me, you will be happy that you did.

Inside, you’ll find a lot of marketing tools, a website builder, keyword research tool, and even hosting is included.

3 thoughts on “What is Usana? – Usana MLM Review”

  1. I enjoyed this post and can relate to the challenges of making money from an MLM company.

Having joined a similar company a few years ago, I found it very hard to make any sales. While I loved the products, I wasn’t cut out for recruiting.

Usana certainly sounds like a good company, and I have to agree that blogging and affiliate marketing are far better alternatives for creating passive income:)

  2. Very Interesting!

I’d always heard of Usana, but I really didn’t know much about it.

I might have to check out their systems.
