What is Matilda Jane?

Based in Fort Wayne, Indiana, USA, Matilda Jane is a multi-level marketing company, often referred to as network marketing or direct selling company.

It produces and sells clothing line designed for little girls, as well as teens and adults.

The mission of the company is to “keep little girls little”.

Watch the video below to learn more about the spirit of Matilda Jane company:

Who is the Founder?

What is Matilda Jane? - The Founder
Denise DeMarchis (1973-2015)

Denise DeMarchis was a clothing designer and founder of Matilda Jane Clothing.

She has been working previously as a decorative artist and although he is a mother of two boys, she decided to focus on designing clothes for little girls.

People close to her family are sharing that if she would have had a little girl, she would have named her Matilda Jane. This is where the idea of Matilda Jane company came from, and this company truly was her baby.

Her colleagues and everyone who knew her are describing Denise to be a very kind person, with a good and so much caring soul.

Besides making our world better every day by trying to bring smiles on every person’s face whom she had to deal with throughout the day, Denise was conducting some commendable charity activities.

Together with her husband, David, Denise established The Mighty Acorn Foundation and built an orphanage in Kenya. Not surprisingly, African kids were calling her “Mama-Denise”.

She suffered from ovarian cancer and died in 2015 at age 41.

What is Matilda Jane’s Financial Situation?

I normally like to take a look at some of the financial numbers of the company in order to see how well it’s going overall. Unfortunately, I wasn’t able to find any information in this respect.

And not only this aspect, but a number of others. For example, it’s unknown how many distributors Matilda Jane has and how much they are earning on average.

All this makes Matilda Jane a bit mysterious company I would most probably stay away from.

What Are Matilda Jane Products?

Initially, Matilda Jane started by producing dresses for little girls. Further on, it has enlarged its products line to girls, tweens, and adults sizes.

Nowadays, they have also included clothes for boys. The following are the current Matilda Jane’s products lines:

Babies’ Line – 0 to 24 moths

Little Girl’s Line – the heartbeat of the company (sizes 2 – 14)

Tween’s line – size 8-16

Women’s Line – Extra Small Size to Extra Extra Large

Matilda Jane also produces accessories (small bags and toys) and products for the home such as pillows, blankets, and bedding.

Matilda Jane products might seem too pricey for families with limited finances which narrows down your niche not into your favor.

How Much Does it Cost to Join Matilda Jane?

In order to become Matilda Jane’s Independent distributor, or how they specifically call them “Trunk Keepers”,  there is a single starting cost of $1600.

This includes an inventory assortment of Girls’ clothing and accessories, promotional items and marketing materials, rack, and hangers.

Besides that, in order to become a Trunk Keeper, there is also a non-refundable deposit of $300 that you’ll have to pay by credit card.

However, according to BusinessForHome.org:

“Matilda Jane is a company that doesn’t just take anyone on board. In order to join, prospects are required to host a trunk show first to decide if they even like it and then can submit an application to be considered”.

How to Make Money With Matilda Jane?

In order to start making money with Matilda Jane, you’ll need to host Trunk events or shows that will show off your wears.

You will have to have a person that is called “Jane”, who will serve as a hostess at your event.

Jane could also be you, and as a Jane, you would earn either a discount or free products depending on the number of sales from the show.

Unfortunately, the discounts aren’t that great. In order to get a 50% discount off one item, your show needs to produce at least $300 in sales.

Trunk Keepers earn 20% commissions for any products they sell. Imagine that you would need to sell a bunch of clothes to make any DECENT amount of money.

If you manage to bring other people into the business, who would be interested to do the same things as you do, you then could earn a percentage of their sales.

Do They Allow You to Use the Internet to Build Your Business?

If you are looking for a way to make money exclusively online, Matilda Jane is not the right place to start because you are going to be working mostly in person, through in-home Trunk Shows.

More than that, it’s very clearly stated in Matilda Jane Clothing Trunk Keeper Policies and Procedures document that you are not allowed to advertise through the internet. This includes your personal website, email, or even Facebook.

Is Matilda Jane Legitimate?

Matilda Jane isn’t accredited with BBB (Better Business Bureau), which is an entity that focuses on advancing marketplace trust.

Still, it’s a legitimate business that if anything happens, could be sued in a court.

By the way, Matilda Jane couldn’t avoid that experience and is actually sued for improper labor practices

Although it seems that the Plaintiff didn’t understand properly what we were getting into. That is why I urge you to study very very carefully all the documents before signing anything.

Can You Make Money With Matilda Jane?

In theory, yes, you can, but there are so many factors and aspects to be aware of.

Say you haven’t met their monthly sales requirements, you then can very quickly lose your status, eligibility to earn commissions, and even your downline.

All your efforts will be in vain in this case. Remember that you are only making commissions from sales and there are no hourly rates attached. If you are not making sales, it means that you are not earning at all.

Besides that, unfortunately, I couldn’t find a publicly available document that would state how much Matilda Jane Trunk Keepers are earning on average.

It seems like they don’t want you and me to know the truth otherwise, what other reason to not disclose this information?

The Good and The Bad

PROs

#1. Exclusive and Unique Product

Matilda Jane has 5 designers working for them who are painting all the prints and patterns. The end result is that customers get exclusive, custom made clothes, almost a piece of art.

This is what makes Matilda Jane’s brand stand out from all the other brands available on the market nowadays.

While this may sound great, the fact that Matilda Jane is available for sale (against their Policies and Procedures) on such online shopping platforms like Amazon, and eBay, don’t add any exclusiveness on the products that you will be trying to sell.

#2. You Don’t Have to Carry Inventory

You are going to have the samples on your rack which you can sell through a Trunk at-home show, little pop-up events, styling appointments, little many fashion shows, getting in front of the people, etc. – that is how you are going to sell Matilda Jane clothes.

#3. Try it Before Joining

Before paying for officially becoming Matilda Jane Independent Distributor, you can host a trunk show first to decide if you like what you are going to be doing every day as Matilda Jane Trunk Keeper.

Simply fill in the form on Matilda Jane’s official website and they should get in touch with you with further details on that.

CONs

#1. High Start-up Costs

There are almost $2000 you’ll need to spend first before you can even make any money with Matilda Jane.

Besides that, there are also 5 different Selling Seasons during Spring and Fall, when you will also be required to purchase a trunk at a stated price.

Although I can’t recommend you getting into any of the MLMs out there, if running a clothing business is what you are looking for, you may want to check out LuLaRoe, which offers way too lower start-up costs.

#2. Monthly Sales Requirements

You will need to make at least $1,500 of sales per month, in order to stay in the game as a Trunk Keeper.

#3. You Pay to Terminate

If you wake up one sunny morning and decide that you no longer wish to be Matilda Jane independent distributor, you have to notify Matilda Jane in writing and send that notification via Federal Express at your own expense.

These expenses are not all. Even after your agreement with Matilda Jane was terminated, you can still be billed for commission refunds from customer returns or product exchanges.

My Final Opinion About Matilda Jane + A Better Alternative

Matilda Jane claims that you will be an entrepreneur building your own business on your terms.

But with all the restrictions and requirements I have described above, does this sound feasible? I am very doubtful.

If you fail to meet any of their requirements or limitations, your agreement will be terminated and you will lose your investment and even your downline.

Let me tell you that there is a more secure and flexible way to build a profitable business.

With more and more people gaining access to the internet, there are more and more people shopping online every day. This is a huge audience you can leverage to create a stable passive income stream.

  1. I really enjoyed your article.

My partner is looking into joining something similar to this type of MLM.

We have 2 little girls and I know she would like to incorporate them somehow.

However, after reading your article I know this is certainly one to avoid. Thank you for a great post.

  2. I think Matilda Jane is legit but too segmented. Since it only attracts a very small scope of people.

And it’s join fee is too high than any online affiliate programs available.

But good article though, thanks for sharing!
