What is Avon?
Founded in the 19th century in New York, USA, Avon is one of the oldest multi-level marketing companies (often referred to as network marketing or direct selling companies).
It manufactures and distributes, through its network of representatives, a wide range of cosmetics, fragrances, jewelry, toys, and apparel products.
Initially, Avon was manufacturing products designed specifically for women but later on, it extended its product line to men and kids.
Nowadays, Avon is owned by Natura Cosmeticos SA and has its headquarters in London, UK.
Avon is present in more than 135 countries worldwide and it counts more than 6 million members.
Who is the Founder?
David H. McConnell was a successful American businessman and entrepreneur with Irish origins.
His initial plans for life were to become a math teacher but instead, he entered the business world and started working for the New York bookselling agency.
He hadn’t made enough income by selling books so he decided to add free perfumes which he made himself.
David saw that ladies were more inclined to buy perfumes rather than books, which led him to the idea of starting his own business which would satisfy women’s needs in beauty products.
What is Avon’s Financial Situation?
The general financial situation of an MLM company may not directly affect its representatives’ income.
Still, it’s good to know how well the company is performing financially. I am sure you wouldn’t want to join a company whose financial indicators are not that good, right?
According to BusinessForHome.org, starting from 2017, Avon’s revenue was steadily decreasing year after year.
Thus, for the 2019 year only, there was a decrease of 14% in comparison to 2018.
It’s not that much, as in the case of Zija International, that registered a decrease of almost 40%.
Still, I think, it’s worth taking this into consideration before deciding to join Avon’s business.
Are Avon Products/Service Any Good?
Let’s first start with Avon products. It’s essential that people are satisfied with them for you being successful in selling Avon products.
Only in 2014, Avon decided to take toxic Triclosan chemical out of its products’ ingredients, as a result of pressures from shareholders and consumers who wanted a safer product.
However, there are still people who claim swell up and itchy eyes, skin, chest pain, and headache after using Avon products.
Their customer service is no better, people are having billing/collections problems, as well as delivery issues.
Overall, there are 51 total customer complaints on BBB (Better Business Bureau) in the last 3 years.
This number might seem not that big if compare with Monat business, which received a total of over a thousand customer complaints.
Of those 51 complaints, only 13 were closed in the last 12 months. Do you agree with me that Avon could have been working better on solving issues people are having with their products/services?
Let me know in the comments area what you think!
In my opinion, this should be very concerning if you are considering joining Avon. If as a member you call customer service and can’t get problems resolved, how are you going to respond back to your clients?
This is a situation that is going to reflect badly on the relationship between you and your clients and could potentially mean lost sales for you.
How Much Does it Cost to Join Avon?
According to Avon’s official website, currently, you can join Avon for free.
However, if you choose this option, you don’t get any brochure, Starter Kit, or samples.
It will be difficult to sell Avon products without these.
That’s why Avon prepared a BestSeller Starter Kit that costs $30 upon sign up and with this, you get $107 value best selling Avon products + 11 brochures.
Here’s what is included in this Starter Kit:
Love at 1st Lash Mascara
Anew Vitamin C Brightening Serum
Avon True Color Eye Shadow Quad
Magix Face Perfector, SPF 20
Flourish Honey Blossom Eau De Parfum
11 Avon brochures
How to Make Money With Avon?
I don’t know why all of the MLM’s are making their compensation plans look so entangled? But don’t worry, I will break it down for you very quickly here.
As with any other MLM out there, there are two ways to earn money with Avon:
#1. Retail Sales
When you become an Avon representative, you get access to their products at wholesale prices.
If you would buy them from Avon, and then resell to the end customers, you could earn up to 40% on beauty, jewelry, health and wellness products, and 20% on apparel and home products.
#2. Build Your Organization and Earn Additional Bonuses
For example, if you recruit 1 new member in your downline, you then are eligible to earn a $20 one-time bonus for each qualified new recruit you personally invite to your team.
Each of the new recruits should submit a paid, minimum order of $150 within their first two campaign.
There are different ranks to grow through in the process of building your Avon organization.
The more people you could recruit into your team, who will later on place product orders, and the more people your recruits could register into their own organizations, the more possibilities for you to make more money.

Do They Allow You to Use the Internet to Build Your Business?
Once you join Avon, you get your very own personalized online store that you can further use to drive leads and sales.
Also, you get:
- free mobile app so you can sell anywhere on the fly
- free social media content
- some free marketing tools
Is Avon a Scam?
I am sure you’ve heard that many of the MLM companies are often called scams. This is because their business model has signs of a pyramid scheme.
However, not all MLM companies are scams, only those that don’t have a product/service behind them and make money solely from getting people to recruit each other.
So, is Avon a scam? Since it supports a variety of products to be sold to the end customer, it’s not a scam.
At the same time, it puts a lot of emphasis on recruiting people, at the risk of attracting the attention of regulatory agencies.
Can You Make Money With Avon?
If you get to talk with anyone at Avon, I am sure that they’ll you about the great earning potential.
How could it not be a great opportunity when they have such a great product?
If you are in this situation, ask them for the Avon Income Disclosure Statement. This will reveal how much a representative actually makes on average as well as what percentage of the members make the big money.
If you actually have the Avon Income Disclosure Statement, please let me know by posting a link to it in the comments below. I wasn’t able to find a copy.
Also, before getting into Avon business, it’s worth realizing that it’s all about selling Avon’s products and you need to be willing to be a salesperson. If not, chances for you to fail and quit, are high.
The Good and The Bad
#1. No Need to Make Monthly Purchases
There are no minimum orders to place and no minimum order amounts.
#2. Use the Internet to Drive Sales and Leads
Avon is giving you your own personalized online store which you can further forward to your friends and family or use social media platforms to promote and sell Avon products.
#3. Low Sign-up Costs
You can choose to sign up for free or pay $30 to get some products and brochures.
#1. Customers’ Complaints
Because there is a good deal of customer complaints all over the internet, you might have a tough time selling Avon products.
Ask yourself: Are you sure you can stand behind Avon’s products? If not, what better way to lose customers than to sell them products you can’t stand behind yourself?
#2. Saturated Market
Avon has been around for more than 130 years and has millions of members. There likely are not many people that don’t already know about Avon.
#3. No Income Disclosure Statement
As I mentioned earlier, I wasn’t able to find a publicly available Income Disclosure Statement.
This sows suspicion that Avon doesn’t want you to be well-informed about average income earned by reps.
My Final Opinion About Avon Business + A Better Alternative
Unfortunately, profiting from MLM is no longer viable. Avon started as a company that was selling perfumes door-to-door. The focus was always on selling the product and not on recruiting.
In recent days though, there are clear signs indicating that the focus at Avon changed from product sales to recruiting.
During the 2009 Super Bowl, Avon has apparently chosen to include a commercial about their business opportunity rather than about their product.
If this tendency persists, chances are that sooner or later, Avon will get into trouble with the law.
If you make a commitment to one of today’s most popular home-based MLM’s – will it be there tomorrow? Nobody knows.
That is why it’s better to build a business that is not that much dependant on so many factors. Remember that if your downline is not making money, either do you.
