What is Kangen Water?
Kangen Water is a registered trademark of Enagic Co., Ltd.
The company develops, produces, and sells alkaline ionizers and water filtration machines, as well as health supplements.
They do this through multi-level marketing which means that you unlikely can find their products in your local stores.
The products are sold solely through their network of independent distributors.
Kangen means “restore to origin” in the Japanese language. The company’s motto is “Change Your Water – Change Your Life”.
Kangen Water has a pH level of pf 8.5-9.5 while normal drinking water has a neutral 7.0 pH level.
Thus, what they want us to believe in is that the water filtered by their machines can help restore the body to its original, alkaline state.
Whether this is really possible or not, you’ll find out in this article in just a sec.!
Who is the Founder?
Enagic was founded by Hironari Oshiro, who is the President, and CEO in Japan.
A lot of people, especially Kangen Water distributors, often drive attention to Oshiro’s age and who well he is looking at his almost 80 years.
As part of their promotional campaign, they say that this is due to the fact he is drinking that special alkaline water produced by Kangen Water filters and ionizers.
What is Enagic’s Financial Situation?
If you were reading my blog previously, you may have noticed that when reviewing different MLMs, I like to have a look at (among many other things) the company’s general financial indicators.
Not that these numbers would give a lot of information for distributors. Still, I believe it’s good to know how much the company is earning overall.
So that you know if it’s doing good (or not so good…). I’m sure you wouldn’t want to join a company that is registering negative finances, right?
Well, concerning Enagic, it seems like they weren’t in their best time over the last 5 years. In the screenshot below it’s clear that they weren’t growing at all between 2015-2017.
That period followed with even a decrease in revenue by $10 million in 2018, and again, a stagnation in 2019.
Alright, every company is experiencing ups and downs in their operations so maybe I shouldn’t be that negative here.
After all, this is not the worse situation in the MLM industry.
The worse I’ve seen since I’m reviewing MLMs on this website is at Zija International.
What Are Enagic’s Products?
Enagic produces and sells all sorts of machines that are designed to improve the quality of your tap water.
These include alkaline ionizers and water filtration machines.
A water ionizer or alkaline ionizer is a home appliance that is supposed to raise the pH of drinking water.
This machine uses electrolysis (which is, in essence, a chemical process) to separate the incoming water steam into acidic and alkaline.
The alkaline steam then becomes alkaline water.
Allegedly, drinking alkaline water help you receive various health benefits.
The water then can be safely used for various purposes like drinking, cooking, beauty, and cleaning, etc.
Also, there are some supplements sold under the UKON brand.
Are Enagic Products Worth the Price?
Enagic says that the Kangen Water is superior to tap and even purified water.
However, there’s no medical evidence that drinking this type of water has any real health benefits.
According to the Mayo Clinic, drinking plain water is better for most people.
Moreover, the FDA has issued an official act (FDA Advisory No. 2014-010-A) that warns against false, deceptive and misleading claims and promotion ploys on “alkaline water” and “oxygenated water”.
Basically, this act states that:
“Any distributors that are promoting and offering for sale or use equipment or devices that would change tap water or bottled water into “alkaline” or “oxygenated” water shall be substantiated through valid clinical trials.
It’s a violation of the FDA Act of 2009, to sell or offer for sale or use purification devices that allegedly produce water known as “alkaline water” or “oxygenated water” and make therapeutic claims without a Certificate of Product Registration (CPR).
Vendo-type outlets or refilling stations, and those engaged in the manufacture, importation, and distribution of water with therapeutic claims shall secure a License to Operate from FDA before applying for a CPR”.
The good news is that there are many third-party certificates listed on the Enagic official website but only one of them is issued by the FDA.
That all looks nice but when I clicked on the “Download” button, here’s what I’ve got:
Is this how the FDA official documents are looking? I have many doubts and this tells me that something is not right here.
As far as I’m aware, there has to be at least the signature of the person who issued the document. Not to mention the entity’s stamp, header, and things like that.
Anyway, that was for their supplement product which is kind of supplemental.
Concerning their flagship product, which is their water ionizer called LeveLuk SD501, there’s no certificate issued by the FDA that they would have made it public on their official website.
On top of that, their prices are above the skies. This LeveLuk SD501 costs almost $4K.
Could you find a product with similar functions from other brands for a more reasonable price?
I bet you can, there are plenty on the market, sold in the price range between $500-$800 or so.
How Much Does it Cost to Join Enagic?
They say on their official website that there’s no sign-up fee to be paid in order to get started with Enagic and sell Kangen Water.
However, when you dig a little deeper you find out that in order to qualify for earning commissions, you’ll need to purchase an Enagic water machine from another Enagic distributor.
You saw a little earlier in this post that Enagic machines aren’t cheap.
The prices start from almost $2K all the way up to $4K-$6K. This is the cost to be paid to become an Enagic independent business representative.
How to Make Money With Enagic?
Enagic uses a direct sales business model which means that they eliminate the middleman.
This is a common thing that so many of the MLMs out there position as a big, big advantage.
They are literally proud of the fact that all of the expenses that many traditional businesses pay to wholesalers, retailers, and advertising costs, Enagic pays directly to its independent sales agents.
Enagic’s compensation structure is based on various ranks. The higher your rank, the more you can potentially make on each sale.
In this business model, you could potentially make money not only from your individual sales (direct sales).
If you invite other people in this Enagic business who would further do the same thing as you (sell Kangen Water machines), you can make money off of your team efforts (indirect sales).
Does Enagic Allow You to Use the Internet to Build Your Business?
Yes, they do it trough EWS which is the official worldwide business management and marketing system for Enagic distributors.
Available on www.enagicwebsystem.com, they have different plan options you can choose from based on your budget.
With the free option, you get the basic things like a free website, a distributor area, and a mobile app. This comes with your distributor membership.
If you want a few adds-on (like sending emails, your website on a custom domain, and things like that), then you’ll have to pay for them between $30 and $180 per month.
However, if you wish to create an individually-designed website for the sake of promotion of your Enagic business, please note that you are prohibited to do so, according to Enagic’s Policies and Procedures.
Is Enagic Legitimate?
A lot of people wonder whether Enagic Kangen Water legit or is it a scam?
Well, the truth is that the Enagic company is legitimate as long as it has real products behind the company. Also, Enagic is a member of the Direct Selling Association.
On the other hand, the Enagic company, although being already so many years in business, is not yet accredited by BBB (Better Business Bureau) and have one of the worst BBB ratings (C-).
They have numerous complaints filed on BBB, here’s just one of them:
Also, just the fact alone that they use the multi-level marketing business model is alarming.
A lot of the MLMs have sings of pyramid schemes and you should be very careful when considering an MLM business to join.
Here’s a short video on how to spot a pyramid scheme:
Can You Make Money With Kagen Water?
Since Enagic started to operate as an MLM, the company hasn’t issued any official document that would clearly show how much Enagic distributors are making, on average.
This alone is a HUGE, HUGE red flag.
It tells me that Enagic doesn’t want you and me to know the exact numbers because most probably these would discourage us from joining Enagic business opportunity.
So, I’d rather stay away from them. Because I know that the overall numbers in the MLM industry are truly sad.
There were made different surveys and reports (including by the FTC) which show that less than 1% of MLM participants make a profit.
While the majority are making no money or worse, lose money.
The Good and The Bad
#1. Numerous Ways to Create a Stream of Income
According to Enagic’s Compensation Plan, these are Direct Sales Commission, Override Commission, Educational Allowance, Monthly Incentive, Quarterly Incentive, Title Incentive, Global Leadership Incentive, and many more.
However, I do find their compensation plan complicated and confusing.
I am afraid that a lot of the MLMs don’t want to create a clear compensation plan just to make you believe that there are so many ways in which you can make money with them.
But in reality, this is how they mask the whole thing, where it’s so difficult to keep track of your progress.
#2. No Monthly Qualifications
Another thing I believe is good about Enagic is that there are no minimum monthly sales quotas.
This means that you won’t have to place regular personal orders to remain active and there’s no annual renewal fee.
#3. Stable Ranks System
Once you’ve achieved a rank status, the better rank will always be retained until your next rank promotion is attained.
#1. High Start-up Costs
They are kind of misleading in terms of what it takes to become an Enagic distributor.
Someone reading their website might assume that it’s free to become an Enagic distributor which is far from the truth.
You’ll find out that you need to purchase one of their water treatment system machines that are not cheap.
Expect to pay between $2K -$6K to get started with Enagic Kangen Water.
Apart from that, there are monthly expenses to bear (up to $180 per month) if you want to build your Enagic business through the internet.
Since we are living in the era of informational technology, it’s indeed a wise idea to do so.
“If your business is not on the internet, then your business will be out of business.
#2. Extremely Expensive Products that Aren’t Even Proven to Work
I have already shown you the prices for Enagic products. Because of that, it could be extremely difficult to sell them.
On top of that, there’s no scientific evidence that using Kangen Water has real health benefits.
Instead, it’s a fact that drinking alkaline oxygenated or ionized water doesn’t change the pH level of the blood.
#3. No Income Disclosure Statement
I find this is really unprofessional and discouraging.
When a company is hiding one of the most important types of information, how could I trust them and join them?
My Final Opinion About Enagic Kangen Water + A Better Alternative
There are also other things which I don’t like about this MLM such as its distributors are making unrealistic claims about earning potential, violating the company’s Policies and Procedures that forbid this.
God, these people are so eager to make money that they make use of all possible and impossible means.
Me personally, I wouldn’t want to be associated with this kind of person.
Another thing worths mentioning is that the Enagic company couldn’t avoid the reputation of class action lawsuits.
Just to name one of them, in 2015, Enagic was sued by a group of people in the USA who accused the company of making unauthorized telephone calls urging them to buy water systems and also become distributors for the company.
As a result, Enagic agreed to pay $27.6 million to settle this auto dialer class-action lawsuit.
Luckily, there are other better ways to create passive income streams for you and your family.
